1. What is the durability of natural stone?
Granite is one of the most durable materials you can buy for your kitchen and bathroom countertops. It is scratch, stain and heat resistant and cleans up easily.
2. What is the thickness of your slabs?
Countertops are 1 ¼" or ¾" however we can cut to size in many thicknesses for other applications such as steps, benches and seats.
3. Do you install?
Yes. A team will be sent to your home to template at your convenience when the cabinets are in place.
4. Do you provide sinks?
Yes. We have sinks and faucets available in our showroom for you to view. We also offer fine custom built farmers sinks out of stone.
5. What are your showroom hours?
By appointment Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 2.
6. What colors do you offer?
Stone comes in a wide range of colors from the typical grays, blacks, blues, greens, tans, beiges and browns to the exotic pinks, purples, golds, whites and many more.
7. How quickly is your turn around or lead time?
Once your cabinets are installed, a stone is selected and we have received a deposit; we will send a team out to template and it is approximately 7 to 10 days to installation.
8. Do I need to hire any outside people?
The only thing you will want to set up is a plumber to turn the direct line to the sink off at install and back on 24 hours later.
9. Do you seal the granite?
Yes, we seal the granite at installation. We also offer a fine line of cleaning and sealant products for sale at our showroom.
10. How do I wash my granite?
You may use warm soapy dishwater and wipe it dry or you can purchase a stone safe product at Granites of America. Never use Windex.
11. Does granite scratch?
Actually, unlike corian, granite is tough enough that you can cut on it without marring the finish. We use diamonds or synthetic diamonds to cut it.
12. Can I put hot pans down on granite?
Yes, granite will withstand temperatures up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit without damage.
13. What about staining?
Your tops are sealed with an impregnating sealer when they are installed. For darker stones you will never have to bother sealing again. If you have selected a lighter or more porous stone we recommend sealing once or twice a year. This is a simple process of spreading sealant with a rag, allowing it to sit for a while and wiping off excess.
14. Where will seams be in my granite?
Seam placement is determined by several things – slab size in the color you have selected, structural support necessary, and accessibility in getting pieces in your home and grain direction.
15. Why are there small fishers and pits in my granite?
Some voids are naturally occurring in all stones. Some of the most beautiful colored or patterned granites are more pitted that others. These are not defects.
16. What about color variation?
Granite is a natural product and color or pattern can vary from slab to slab or even within the same slab. Therefore, not every piece of your project will be identical. Also, due to variations in the shading within each slab it is likely that there will be some differences at backsplashes and seams. There may also be differences in the gloss level within the same slab due to varying density of the stone. These are natural qualities of stone that add to its uniqueness.
17. How do they under mount my sink?
We cut and polish the opening for your sink and drill and insert the receivers for screws that hold clips. This is done by our install team. Heavier sinks such as cast iron or farmer sinks may require your contractor to build a support within the cabinet. This is known as a cradle.
18. When am I ready for template?
You must have your entire base cabinets installed and have on hand your sink (if not supplied by Granites of America), your faucet, cook top, slide in stove, soap dispensers and or any appliance that needs to be cut into or fitted around your top. If you have existing countertops they must be removed or we can remove and dispose of them for a small fee.
